Collaborative Screening Confirms Negligible Microplastic and PFAS Contamination in the Savegre River

QERC, in collaboration with the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, conducted an initial assessment of emerging contaminants in the Savegre River, establishing a scientific baseline for long-term watershed monitoring.

Field sampling in January 2025, supported by accredited laboratory analysis, found low levels of microplastics—primarily polyethylene—and negligible contamination overall. Parallel PFAS screening was also conducted, with final results pending formal reporting.

Beyond the findings, the initiative highlights QERC’s model: combining rigorous scientific methods with hands-on student research and international collaboration. The project strengthens both environmental monitoring in a sensitive high-elevation ecosystem and experiential education, while reinforcing partnerships aimed at credible, long-term conservation.
